Update on Street Ministry from Francis Mbuvi on 21 January 2008
Hope you are all well and still pressing on. Young boys who come for
the Monday program were happy to meet and stay away at least for some
hours from all the skirmishes going on in the country. As you know most
of them have friends, relatives and some family in the Mathare Valley
and its environs where fighting has been intense.
We started by playing some games and then went for our class where I
asked them to talk about what was happening. Stephen said
"Naogopa kwenda ghetto juu mimi ni mjaka" (I am afraid of going to the
slums because I am a Luo. nb: He stays in the Eastleigh slum and
sleeps on the streets, but he thinks of Mathare Valley as the
slum). He explained that those chopping and cutting others did
not ask lots of questions when they met you. His sentiments are echoed
by most of the boys in the class. They have seen all sorts of evil
happening during the last few weeks.
Our lesson came from the book of 1st Peter where he writes of suffering
for doing good. Larry Conway and I encouraged them that it
brought blessings when they suffered for doing good especially when
they see others doing bad. We believe and continue to hope they will be
able to live worthy lives for Christ.
They were also happy to share in a hot meal. A picture of John
and Kinyanjui is attached, and they felt happy to get a hot home cooked
meal. We are always thankful to all of you who help us to bring
joy and happiness in the lives of street youth.
In Him,
Francis Mbuvi.
