News of Street Moms Program

Last week Catherine was able to write her name for the first time. Ann says Catherine had not had any schooling and has stayed with her father for a long time. The father came to visit her and said that he was happy she had found a good place to stay and take care of her child.  Before last week Catherine and Eunice had been taking classes learning the alphabet and writing. She was very happy to be able to write her name and she is catching up quickly. She has also learned to take care of her child and has adjusted to feeding times. They report that she has one fear of anyone locking the door of their dorm on the outside when she is in.  This is because she was told that her mother died by a fire which gutted their house and someone had locked the door on the outside.  Ann has asked the other mothers not to lock the door for any reason while she is inside.

This is Mutua -- Catherine's son is having a ride in one of the toys at the Eastleigh centre.

Ann has told me that Eunice has adjusted very well to living at the Eastleigh centre. She says that when they came, Eunice was very harsh to Kevin and occassionally beat him. Through counseling and teaching her better ways to correct and take care of the son, she has been able to love him more and have a good treatment. She has also been able to attend classes and improve on her reading and writing. Now she loves to be in class and is always happy.

Yvonne is feeling much better now and is attending at least one class each day. She gave birth just three weeks ago. Ann says that she is bright and understands both written and spoken English. She is somehow quiet but a happy person to be around. She loves being with MITS and is thankful that we helped her at the time that we did.

Here is Bill Smith, one of the contact persons at Otter Creek Church.  He is on a visit in March to Made in the Streets along with his wife Betty and Winston and Linda Biggs.  Winston and Betty have assisted MITS in development of the sewing program.  Mutua has fallen asleep on Bill's shoulder at the Eastleigh Center.
